The new for 2019 Steyr Arms L9-A2 MF is a large semi-automatic 17-round 9 mm pistol. This is an evolution of the earlier A1, but Steyr has improved the comfort by doing things like improving the grip design and extending the beavertail. Despite the A2 designation, this is actually a fourth generation of the Steyr M-series. L9 means “large 9 mm” while MF stands for modular frame. [It’s worth noting there is also a medium Steyr Arms M9-A2 MF and a compact Steyr Arms C9-A2 MF.]
Key dimensions: length: 7.9”, height: 5.6” and 1.3” wide. The barrel is 4.5” long. The weight is 1.7 pounds.
The styling is purposeful and elegant without being flashy or trendy. The slide has some faceting on top, by the muzzle and at back. The L9-A2 MF has trapezoidal sights. Thus viewed from in back, the rear is white-lined notched pyramid base and the front is a white pyramid top.
The small chambered circular pop-out button at the back of the slide permits its owner to feel to see if a round is chambered or not even without looking at it. There is also a sight hole indicator atop the slide.
Slide grips are at front and back, as expected, but there are five in front and ten at rear, meaning 15 serrations per side! It’s visually busy, but not distractingly so.
The overall impression is of black. Exceptions include the slide lock, takedown lever and magazine release, all of which are gray. The barrel is matte black Mannox finished.
This gun features four safeties. There is a key lock safety, trigger safety, an indirect firing pin safety and a drop safety.
There is a full length five rung accessory rail below the muzzle for adding laser dot sights, etc.
The trigger guard is gently curved down toward the front, but then the front portion is vertical and ridged with a little finger rest.
The grip flanks are rugged textured polymer while the fore-grip and backstraps are serrated. Different grips are available for different size hands and can be easily swapped out. Grip texturing rises all the way to the slide. The magazine release is ambidextrous while the magazine well is flared at the base for faster reloading. Fit and finish is precise.
