Stoeger is a Maryland-based American company owned by Italian arms manufacturer Benelli Armi that is in turn owned by well-known Beretta. Stoeger has marketed pistols before, but not made a huge mark yet. Now they bring us the Stoeger STR 9, an affordable large striker-fired semi-automatic 15+1 round 9 mm pistol.

In base configuration, the Stoeger STR 9 is similar to a variety of other large 9 mm pistols. It has a barrel vaulted upper slide, high textured rear grip for reducing muzzle flip, docked beavertail, texturized grip panels, an under-muzzle Picatinny attachment accessory rail for laser sights, a grooved concave trigger guard, a crisp clean-breaking trigger, a last-shot lock-back slide, etc.

The gun’s various surfaces are curved or faceted for snag-resistant operation. And finally, the slide is stainless steel with a matte black Nitride finish and a matte black frame that is polymer, for saving weight and affordability. The Stoeger STR 9 has diagonal serrated front and rear grips as do many other 9 mm pistols, but the Stoeger’s are deeply concave, which will be a great for gloved operations. This also provides design harmony since the slide grips go naturally with the barrel vaulted length of the slide.

What is somewhat unusual about the Stoeger STR 9, at least at this affordable level, is its removable back straps or its magazine release configurable for either right-hand or left-hand use.

And here is where it gets fun. The base Stoeger STR 9 pistol comes standard with one 15 round magazine, one backstrap and white-dot dovetail front and rear sights. Other versions include a 10 round magazine, three backstraps and three 15 round magazines or three backstraps and three 10 round magazines.

These last two options also have a variant with front and rear Tritium sights. Thus three backstraps, three 15 round magazines and Tritium sights or three backstraps, three 10 round magazines and Tritium sights.

Finally, one Stoeger STR 9 variant is designed for optical sights (not included). The upper slide has a rectangular opening cut just before the rear white dot sight and comes with four different mounting plates permitting a great variety of optical sights to be fitted onto the pistol.

Regardless of configuration, the pistol weighs in at 24 to 26 ounces. The Stoeger STR 9 is Made in Turkey.
