The Taurus 689 6-shot revolver is a medium-frame double-action/single-action gun built around either a 4” or 6” long fully-shrouded barrel that’s paired with an elegant five-span vent rib. There is a full-length underlug beneath. The gun sold in various combinations that included a stainless-steel gun paired with rubber grips and a high-polish blued gun with Brazilian walnut grips. Regardless of pairing, they collaborate splendidly to make a great looking gun.
This Made in Brazil revolver saw production about 10 years from the late 1980s to the late 1990s. The fact it was built in Brazil (where wages, etc., are lower) made the gun much more affordable than some of its comparable peers.
The 689 is identical to the Taurus 669 except the aforementioned vent rib. In fact, when the 689 first entered production, it was badged simply as the 669 VR (as in vented rib)!
The 4” barrel model’s total length is 8.75”, and it weighs 36.5 ounces. The 6” gun is 11.25” in overall length and weighs 40.25 ounces.
The cylinders are fluted. This helps shave weight but it also looks great.
The top of the rib is fluted from front to back, which helps cut glare. The front sight has an orange insert on the long serrated ramp while the rear target-style sight is flat-head screwdriver that’s micrometer click-adjustable for windage. Some Taurus 689s also had fully adjustable sights that could be set for both elevation and windage.
The revolver’s double-action/single-action functionality is very nice. You can squeeze the trigger and fire it, or you can cock the gun first and then fire it single-action with less effort required to pull the trigger.
The 689 has the Taurus Security System, which locks the gun via a special key.
There is something decidedly mechanical or pure about guns like the 689. While it was made with modern technology in its day, it lacked fancy materials. Almost anything could have been part of a similar revolver of 50 years earlier.
