The deliberately retro Tanker Thompson is Auto-Ordnance’s limited edition semi-automatic carbine version of World War II’s famous M1 rifle. Its inspiration is the fully automatic M1 “Tommy Gun” that was famously known for its ruggedness, accuracy and hard-hitting firepower using .45 ACP pistol cartridges. Originally developed for World War I usage, the M1’s other nickname was the “trench broom.”
During World War II, American M4 Sherman tankers normally carried one M1 aboard each vehicle to use against enemy infantry or to use during down hours outside their tank while on guard duty. It is in honor of these valiant tankers and the expression “built like a tank” that these new semi-automatic .45 ACP rifles have been named Tanker Thompson.
Gorgeous details abound in this retro design. Like the original, the Tanker Thompson is rugged and very accurate. It features a tall front-blade sight and a fixed rear battle sights. The smooth 16.5"" long gun barrel is US Army olive drag green and Cerakoted. The side bolt falls nicely to the right hand. The horizontal front stock, butt stock and pistol grip are all walnut. Both sides of the frame feature a big white star just aft of the front stock. This is an homage to the giant white stars on Sherman tanks. And both sides of the fixed butt stock also feature the big letters “U.S.” branded prominently in the stencil font seen on American crates, military equipment, etc., worldwide during World War II.
The Kerr sling strap is thick desert tan canvas with metal loops and buckles. It connects to the stock via front and back sling swivel mounts. This semi-automatic carbine comes with a matching three-stick desert tan canvas pouch carrier. Speaking of which, the Tanker Thompson features both a 20 round olive drag green stick magazine and a 30 round one too.
Overall length is 38”, and this gun weighs in at 11.5 pounds.
