The Tristar Arms KRX came to market toward the end of 2016. It’s a gas-operated, box-fed, 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun in an AR-evoking package that’s chambered for up to 3” ammo.

The gun comes in two flavors: matte black and field dark earth (FDE). The matte black one is all black. The FDE model’s handguard (forearm) and stock are FDE while other key components such as the butt pad, sights, barrel, magazine cap, handgrip and receiver remain black.

The barrel is 20” long and the KRX’s weight is 7.4 pounds. Both the barrel and the chamber behind it are chrome-lined for durability.

The design is clever and replete with nice, user-friendly features. For instance, the carrying handle is removable while the synthetic forearm is crowned by a full-length Picatinny rail that’s accompanied by a smaller Picatinny rail at 6 o’clock.

Helping keep weight down, the receiver is made of aluminum. The gun has some nice lines including the main horizontal ones that move from front to back. Unusually, the handguard’s upper lines, receiver and butt stock are unified. This is paralleled by another long horizontal accent line that runs much of the gun.

The removable forearm and stock are both injection-molded. Each side of the handguard has four ovoid cooling ports as well another 12 matching ovoid recesses that echo the style, and the handguard’s bottom is texturized for better grip and feel.

The KRX is also well-equipped. Moving forward, the gun has a removable bridge front fiber optic sight. Ahead the gun is fronted by a CT-1X extended tactical choke. The choke is removable and compatible with other Beretta/Benelli Mobile threaded devices.

The KRX’s safety is at the back of the trigger guard. This single safety blocks the hammer, hammer lever and trigger. The pistol grip is nicely designed with contouring in front, texturing along the sides and a generous palm swell at back. At back is a thick black rubber recoil pad.

The shotgun has two swivel studs. One fronts the magazine cap in the forearm while the other one is below the butt stock. The KRX comes with two 5-round box magazines that are easily fed into the flared magwell at the bottom of the gun. Tristar Arms is in North Kansas City, Missouri.
