For over 130 Years Walther Arms has been a leader in the firearms industry. Beginning in 1886, Walther Arms originally manufactured hunting and target rifles until 1908, when Carl Walther and his son, Fritz, began to make pistols. The original pistol models 1 through 5, and 7 through 9 were in calibers 6.35 and 7.65 and were the first usable self-loading pistol. Virtually every World War I German officer carried one of the small Walther pocket pistols.
The Model 6 was Walther's first attempt at a 9mm Luger pistol, but was unsuccessful and is not a collector's item. In 1929 Walther began to make “police pistols" or PP models that were the first with a single/double action trigger and in 1931 was followed by the first of the PPKs. Both the PP and PPKs were manufactured in .22 Long Rifle, .32 ACP, and .380 ACP calibers. In 1938 the German Reich awarded the contract to Walther for the 9mm P38.
After World War II, Walther was reduced to just a collection of designs and patents until Fritz Walther started manufacturing again in Ulm, Germany. The company resumed production of the P38 (aka P1) in 1957 in order to equip the new West German Army with a more powerful sidearm. In 1966 Fritz Walther died and his son, Karl-Heinz, took over the company and focused on sporting firearms and the inclusion of new technologies.
With an ongoing tradition of success, Walther firearms were used to win gold medals at the Atlanta Olympics and developed “The Pistol for the Next Century", the Model P99, a critically acclaimed police and defense firearm. In 1999 Walther made a move for future success that joined forces with Smith and Wesson to distribute Walther firearms in the United States.
Walther also made its name known through the silver screen.
