The Weatherby Vanguard First Light is from the Vanguard family of nicely priced, high-quality, sub-MOA high-performance bolt-action rifles.

First Lite stands out from the rest by virtue of its unique namesake First Lite camouflage scheme. It’s a “Fusion” late-Fall woodsy camouflage scheme that integrates hardwoods, lichen and other appropriate colors and patterns with utmost effectiveness. It blends in to the background surprisingly quickly.

The Vanguard First Lite, like its stable-mates, spans a wide-latitude of ammunition grouped into two capacities. In 3+1, the First Lite can be had in .257 Weatherby Magnum, .270 WSM., 7 mm Remington Magnum, .300 WSM., .300 Weatherby Magnum and .338 Winchester Magnum. There are also six 5+1 variants. They are .223 Remington, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester and the .30-06 Springfield.

The #2 contour barrel is cold hammer forged and has a flat dark earth (FDE) Cerakote outer layer sprayed on for increased durability and protection. It’s also beautifully fluted, saving weight while conserving strength and rigidity. The barrel has a 1/2”x28 TPI thread fronted by an Accubrake radially-drilled recoil-reducing muzzle brake. It has the same diameter and coloring as the barrel and integrates remarkably harmoniously with the rest of the gun.

Further back, the bolt sleeve is fully enclosed for safety. It’s been shortened for weight reduction. The machined bolt body is one-piece and fluted, just like the barrel. It’s also gas ported for safety. Speaking of which, the gun has a three-position safety.

A key component in Vanguard rifles is the modern synthetic Griptonite stock. It has non-slip texturing inserts at the forend and for the pistol grip. Perhaps best of all, this rugged stock has a Monte Carlo design, meaning it has a raised cheek comb for scope usage and a corresponding right-side palm swell for improved ergonomics and comfort. That it’s synthetic reduces the gun’s overall weight, making it easier to keep on hand when you want it. It also has swivel studs in front and back.

The gun’s two-stage adjustable match quality curved trigger is factory set to 2.5 pounds of pull. It has crisp, clean, breaks.

The hinged floorplate in front of the trigger guard makes accessing unfired cartridges easy. At back the First Lite has a thick, but gently curved, recoil pad to mitigate felt recoil.

All this sophistication combines to give the gun its sub-MOA rating, meaning that given factory or premium ammunition, it can shoot a group of three rounds within an inch at up to 100 yards.
