Wilson Combat Tactical Hunter combines lightweight looks in an ultra-modern high-tech AR-type semi-automatic package wrapped around 18” or 20” match-quality fluted barrels in an overall length that’s 34.25” to 35” and weighs about 7 pounds depending on caliber, barrel, etc.

If this formula seems familiar, it’s because Wilson Combat uses a similar AR setup in its slightly shorter 16” long barrel/33” overall length Recon Tactical AR carbines. In fact, a casual user would have a hard time telling which was which without placing them side by side. At that point, the Wilson Combat Tactical Hunter’s greater length becomes apparent through the increased number of M-LOK slots and longer barrel.

The Tactical Hunter has several configurations across several calibers: .22 Nosler, .300 HAM'R and .458 HAM’R. So, for instance, the .300 HAM’R has four barrel options: 18” fluted, 18” non-fluted, and then the same two options in 20” barrel lengths. In the past, other calibers such as 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Remington, 7mm-08 Remington, .308 Winchester and .338 Federal have also been available.

The Tactical Hunter barrels are matte bead-blasted and made of Type 416R stainless steel, threaded and come with a thread protector.

The handguard is a thing of functional beauty, and it’s made in-house by Wilson Combat. It is 14.6” long and has a raised roof octagonal profile, full-length Picatinny rail and plenty of M-LOK slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, just like one would expect in this class. The raised roof under the Picatinny rail hides a rifle-length gas system and an SLR Rifleworks Adjustable gas block that can be tuned to handle different loads.

But the fluted barrel that’s partially hangered in handguard is perhaps the gun’s most eye-catching feature and gives it a mini-Gatling gun appearance. The Tactical Hunter nicely comes with a small five-slot Picatinny rail that can be positioned pretty much anywhere on the handguard and three Wilson Combat rail covers to position anywhere over unused slots.

The long Picatinny rail atop the M-LOK handguard and upper receiver gives you plenty of room for sights such as a scope, spring-loaded flip up front and rear sights or both. One can get the gun with or without a scope. There are two scope kit options: the Leupold VX-2 3-9×40mm or the more powerful and waterproof Burris Optics’ Fullfield E1 4.5-14x42mm.

At back is an A-frame skeletonized Rogers/Wilson Super-Stoc stock. It has a dorsal sling loop, semi-protected quick-release lever and removable butt pad. The stock has a nice cam-lock lever right by the buffer tube sleeve that prevents any play, wobble or unintentional changes.

The pistol grip has the radial sunburst pattern Wilson Combat uses on other guns such as its EDC X9 semi-automatic 1911. The grip is by Bravo Company Manufacturing (BCM) and looks very sharp. The frontstrap has horizontal serration surfacing and the back includes an integrated beavertail and a storage compartment accessed via a water-resistant hinged trap door in the bottom.

The Wilson Combat Tactical trigger guard has a bend at the bottom. Framed within is the Wilson Combat M2 two-stage trigger with four pounds of pull pressure. The unit has been designed to be fully self-contained making it easy to swap for upgrades and replacements with compatible guns.

Both upper and lower receiver are Mil-Spec hard anodized and then finished with Armor-Tuff for increased wear and tear resistance. The gun comes standard in matte black or olive drab green, but there are also other optional camouflages.

The gun handles box magazines that shove easily into the flared magwell. Wilson Combat builds the capable Tactical Hunter AR in Berryville, Arkansas, making these guns Made in USA.
