The Wilson Combat Ultralight Ranger compellingly combines ultra-modern looks in a lightweight, minimalist high-tech AR wrapped around 16” and 18” match-quality fluted barrels in an overall length that’s up to 37” and weighing about 7 pounds 6 ounces depending on caliber, barrel, etc.

If this formula seems familiar, it’s because Wilson Combat uses a similar AR setup in its 16” long barrel Recon Tactical AR carbines and slightly longer 18” and 20” barrel Tactical Hunter AR rifles. In fact, of those two, a casual user would have a hard time telling which was which unless the two were placed side by side. The Wilson Combat Ultralight Ranger’s 16” and 18” barrels overlap its aforementioned siblings but uses a different stock and different pistol grip for further economy of weight.

The Ultralight Ranger has two barrel lengths and multiple calibers. In 16” barrels, we have .300 AAC Blackout, 5.56 NATO, 6.8mm Remington SPC, 7.62x40mm Wilson Tactical and in a fluted 16” barrel, the .350 Legend. Last, the .300 HAM’R comes in an 18" fluted barrel.

The Ultralight Ranger barrels are matte bead-blasted and made of Type 416R stainless steel. They are threaded and come with a Wilson Q-Comp muzzle brake. It’s a long birdcage design, and just like you’d expect, it does a wonderful job reducing felt recoil, muzzle flip and flash.

Wilson Combat makes the M-LOK handguard in-house. It measures a neat 10” long and has a raised roof octagonal profile, full-length Picatinny rail and plenty of M-LOK slots at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The raised roof hides the gas system and an SLR Rifleworks adjustable gas block that can be tuned to handle different loads.

The Ultralight Ranger comes with a small five-slot Picatinny rail that can be positioned pretty much anywhere on the handguard and three Falcon/Ergo rail covers to position anywhere over unused slots.

The long Picatinny rail atop the M-LOK handguard and upper receiver gives you plenty of room for sights such as a scope, spring-loaded flip up front and rear sights or both.

At back is an astonishingly minimalist Smoke Composites carbon fiber butt stock. It’s the lightest stock on the market and can work with any Mil-Spec buffer and spring. The stock has a snag-free triangular shape and is made of 35-50 carbon fiber and aviation-grade 7075 aluminum. It is non-adjustable, has no rubber butt pad, but does have two very useful M-LOK slots, and the entire stock weighs a shade under 5 ounces.

The pistol grip flanks have an attractive radial pattern and texturing in between the radii. The grip comes in black and is manufactured by Mission First. The frontstrap has horizontal serration surfacing while the back includes an integrated beavertail. Also, the grip has a storage compartment accessed via a water-resistant hinged trap door in the bottom.

The Wilson Combat Tactical trigger guard has a bend at the bottom. Framed within is the Wilson Combat M2 two-stage trigger with four pounds of pull pressure. The unit has been designed to be fully self-contained making it swap for upgrades and replacements with compatible guns.

Both upper and lower receiver are Mil-Spec hard anodized and then finished with Armor-Tuff for increased wear and tear resistance. The gun comes standard in matte black or olive drab green, but there are also other optional camouflages.
