The Winchester Model 37 break-open, single-shot, single-barrel shotgun debuted in 1936 and graced production lines until 1963. It spanned 12-gauge, 16-gauge, 20-gauge, 28-gauge and .410-bore.

They were good looking steel guns bedded in American Walnut. Though there was nothing fancy about them, Winchester easily sold over a million. In fact, their acclaimed appeal was their affordability. All were built right here in the USA. Early guns sold for $8.65 apiece! Even considering inflation, that was a great deal. They were lightweight, solid, easy to aim, and reliable making them ideal on the farm and/or for junior shooters or lady shooters.

The Model 37 were chambered for 2 ¾” shells in 12-gauge, 16-gauge and 20-gauge, 2 7/8” for 28-gauge and 3” for .410-bore. The stock was elegant with a simple, tapered toward the front, semi-beavertail forend and a curved pistol grip. The barrel was topped by a bead sight and fronted by a full choke. Moving back, the semi-hammerless designed gun had an automatic ejector, a wide-locking surface on the barrel lug and a rebounding firing pin and cocking lever. All the way at back was a hard rubber buttpad.

Winchester wanted to hammer the point that these were made of steel rather than iron, so early guns featured the word “Steelbilt” on the gun. This excellent marketing simply emphasized the truth.

The 12-guage had a 30” or 32” barrel choices. The 16-gauge and 20-gauge had 28” barrels. The 28-gauge had 28” and 30” barrel options and 410s had 26” and 28” barrel options. In all cases, length of pull was 14”, drop at comb was 1 5/8” while drop at heel was 2 5/8”. Overall lengths were about 16.25” more than the barrel and the guns weighed 6 to 6.5 pounds depending on barrel and chambering.
