The Winchester Model 70 Sporter bolt-action rifle impressively covers 10 calibers (e.g., 25-06 REM, 270 Win, 30-06 Spfld) in both long-action and short-action and 24” to 26” barrel variants! But beyond that, it’s a good-looking rifle, with a brush polished blued sporter barrel and receiver mated to a Grade I satin polished black walnut stock all backed by a very popular recoil absorbing Pachmayr Decelerator pad.

The receiver is forged of steel, is drilled and tapped for scopes and has an integrated recoil lug optimized for long-range accuracy. Inside is a claw extractor that grabs spent casings ensuring the gun’s reliability. The bolt’s controlled round feed actively manages the movement of the rounds as they move up from magazine to chamber. The manual blade ejector helps you manage how far the spent casings eject.

The barrel has a sporter contour pointing to a recessed target crown that protects the bore’s rifling. The stock has nice stylish detailing such as 20 LPI (lines per inch) cut checkering and steel sling swivel studs. In back, the stock has a raised cheekpiece sculpted with some nice lower curves.

The nicely placed safety is a three-position type (fire, firing pin blocked and safe) that clearly indicates when the gun is safe (and when it’s not).

This Winchester also incorporates Winchester’s highly accurate MOA Trigger System that’s factory dialed to 3.5 pounds of pull pressure. Winchester cleverly designed it so the trigger travels only half the distance of the actuator. The trigger is finely tuned and superbly predictable, with practically zero take-up, zero creep and zero overtravel.

The Model 70 Sporter caliber choices are 264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, 25-06 REM, 270 Win, 30-06 Spfld, 300 WSM, 270 WSM and 325 WSM. The first four have 26” barrels, measure 46.25” overall and weigh 7 pounds 12 ounces. The others have 24” barrels, measure 44.25” overall and weigh 7 pounds 4 ounces. The first seven are long-action guns while the last three are short-action. The 25-06 REM, 270 Win, 30-06 Spfld are 5+1 capacity while the others are 3+1 capacity.
