The centerfire Winchester 9422 is the .22 S/.22 L/.22 LR version of the famous Model 1894 lever-action repeating rifle. Tubular magazine capacity was 21 rounds in the .22S, 17 in .22L and 15 in .22LR.

The 1894 followed other famous John Browning-designed Winchesters, such as the Winchester 1873, marketed as “The Gun that Won the West”. The 9422 had smaller dimensions befitting its youth target audience. Winchester even produced a Boy Scouts of America BSA Limited Edition and an Eagle Scout Limited Edition Commemorative.

Winchester roll-engraved (instead of hand-engraved) the receivers and XTR-cut checkered the gun’s American walnut giving them an elegant classic antique appearance at an affordable price.

Winchester offered the 9422 with a straight stock. These had tapered 20 1/2” Winchester proof steel muzzle crowned barrels and measured 37 1/8" in overall length with a 13 1/2" length of pull. Drop at comb was 1 3/4" while drop at heel was 2 1/2".

Winchester 9422s featured a hooded front sight backed up by a sporting rear sight. (Some had front bead sights, etc., as well.) Weight was 6 1/4" pounds.

The Eagle Scout Limited Edition Commemorative was roughly three times the price of the Boy Scout version when brand new in the 1970s. However, the Eagle Scout version was truly a limited edition. More importantly, the scrollwork was deep etched and gold-plated in antique gold. Winchester made just 1,000, serial numbers “Eagle 1” to “Eagle 1,000”.

Other versions included an Annie Oakley Commemorative (serial numbers AOK0001 to AOK6000), XTR Standard, XTR Magnum (for .22 WMR), etc.
