Winchester Repeating Arms’ SX4 (Super X Gen-4) series of sport shotguns performs a neat trick: it delivers more at a lower price than its predecessor.

The standard version of the gun is simple, elegant unadorned matte black. Then there are the camouflage versions too. These are by Mossy Oak and TrueTimber. The camouflage patterns not only break up the lines of their SX4s, but, for better or worse, they obfuscate some state-of-the-art technology and looks.

With user experience in mind, there’s a lot of fine grain texturing for improved and/or more comfortable grips everywhere one’s hands would be during normal usage. For instance, the stock has a nicely sized and textured pistol grip. On top of that, the fairly thick barrel makes it easy to carry like a suitcase while just walking around.

The gun comes with two polymer butt stock .25” spacer pads to optimize length of pull for different users. They fit in between the butt stock end and the redesigned absorbent Inflex Technology recoil pad that provides even better recoil distribution than the prior model. It also pushes the comb down and away from your face.

The reversible safety is on the stock just behind the trigger area while the trigger guard is big enough for heavy glove use. Moreover, the gun has a simple retention one-pin for the entire trigger system. Push it out and the entire trigger system drops out easily for cleaning.

Of note are the Quadra-Vent ports that vent gases in different directions for faster follow up shots and the active-valve system is self-adjusting for different types of rounds.

Most Winchester SXP shotguns come with the Invector-Plus choke tube system though the actual tubes differ between variants.

The bolt is big and easy to operate. The ambidextrous crossbolt safety is reversible for either right-hand or left-hand use.

Winchester SX4 shotgun variants include .12 and .20 gauge, barrel lengths include 24”, 26” and 28”, magazine capacities of four rounds, materials, weights, sizes and finishes.
