The Winchester SXP True Timber Urban Viper is a well-made, affordable and attractive 4+1 (2 3/4") / 3+1 (3”) pump-action shotgun with a mesmerizing camouflage scheme available in both 12-gauge and 20-gauge models. The heart of the gun is the 18” long steel barrel. The gun’s overall length is 38.5” while weight is a spritely 6 pounds 4 ounces.

Actually, the True Timber Urban Viper is just one model in the fairly populous family of almost 50 Winchester SXPs. They vary in their sights, grips, stocks, color/camouflage schemes, pump/forearms, whether or not they have a ventilated rib above the barrel, etc.

The True Timber Urban Viper is set apart by its eponymous camouflage that’s seems a graffiti inspired palette of random shapes of medium gray to black and several shades in between. The aluminum alloy receiver, barrel, pump and polymer stock are all bear the True Timber Urban Viper camouflage. Look carefully and you’ll see the two arrow True Timber logo and the word VIPER in different places.

Most everything else, such as the front sight mount, trigger, trigger guard, ejection port, loading port, magazine tube and butt pad are all matte black. Many parts, such as the receiver, stock, trigger, trigger guard have a glare-cutting matte finish.

The gun lacks a rear sight, however, the top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for a scope base. The most noticeable thing about the SXP’s front is its very long green TRUGLO fiber optic sight. It’s detachable, and to that point, look carefully, and you’ll see it almost hides a brass bead sight that sits just in front of it.

The muzzle handles Invector-Plus flush chokes, and SXP comes with a cylinder choke.

The receiver is made of aluminum alloy. Inside, the rotating bolt has four steel locking lugs and locks beautifully and securely into the steel barrel, which has a 3” long chrome-plated chamber.

The butt stock has some attractive accent lines to compliment fairly conventional (and useful) dimensions. Thus the drop at the comb is 1 3/8” while the drop at the heel is 1 5/8”. The length of pull is 13 3/4”. At back is an Inflex recoil pad. It is very comfortable and when the gun fires, its internal structuring directs some of the recoil forces down the pad instead of straight back.

A ribbed pump wraps around the steel magazine tube, which accepts either four 2 3/4" or three 3” loads. The pump action is inertia-assisted, making for super-fast follow up shots.

The grip and trigger area are nicely thought out. There is texturing on the grip. The button safety is intuitively integrated into the front of the trigger guard. And loading is through the belly via a sprung loading port.

Lastly, the SXP has a pair of sling studs. One prows the magazine cap while the other is molded into the composite butt stock’s bottom.
