This original condition WWII pistol was produced under Navy contract and delivered to the Navy. Specifically, this pistol was one of 3,650 shipped to OIC Naval Supply Depot Norfolk VA on Sept. 21, 1944. A NAVY PISTOL UNDER NAVY CONTRACT [Clawson, "Collector's Guide..." pg.124]. Colt was not the only mfg. making Navy 1911A1 pistols. For reasons listed below, I believe the finish is 99% and all parts original. It comes with a mod.1916 holster dtd 1944. I stripped the pistol and compared all parts with the proper inventory in Harrison's book. All of the parts are original in type for the 1944 date including the barrel [HS] and magazine [Risdon]. The barrel is bright with strong lands. [see photos] The Ithaca proof [odd shaped mark] is still located on left side trigger guard. Harrisons book "U.S. Pistols & Revolvers 1909-1945" states, starting with 1,208,674, to end of production, serial numbers were stamped after finish. These appear to be. Under glass, there appears to be a burnish finish and the numbers are very crisp. For original finish, the small parts are blued. All of the small parts on the pistol are blued. If there were a typical reparkerize, they typically just parkarize everything. He then states Ithaca used a finish similar to the Union Switch pistols- sandblasted then blued or parkerized. The sandblasting could then account for the less than crisp lettering on the remaining text- this effect is also what I have seen on Union Switch pistols. So, from the small parts with original blue finish, all parts being original to the pistol, the original mag, the barrel showing little wear and the minor use the Navy puts to pistols, I opine the finish, sandblast blue/park, is a 99% original finish.
