Smith & Wesson .38 Special Model 10 No Suffix 1962 Good-VG Air Force markings Front Line Cold Warrior from 1962

OUR #HG9851

Item Description

This listing is for the exact revolver in the photos. From a career with the U.S. Air Force and its affiliates comes this collectable and serviceable revolver. Manufacturer was Smith & Wesson of Springfield, MA. Named model is .38 Military & Police. Numbered model is 10, simply 10 no suffix. From its C537000 range serial number, it was manufactured around the end of 1961. Type is traditional swingout double and single action service revolver with transfer bar safety mechanism. Frame is K Medium Square Butt 4 Screw, attest the Cylinder Stop Screw in the trigger guard, with 3 screw side plate.Construction is entirely steel metal, with 4 inch one piece tapered or Pencil Barrel, 1:18.75 five groove right hand rifling, pinned into the frame. Chambering is .38 Smith & Wesson Special caliber. Cylinder Capacity is six rounds. Sight is barrel integral serrated ramp front, with fixed notch frame integral rear. Cylinder release thumb latch is classic checkered serration concave. Ignition is hammer nose type firing pin on a .265 service width hammer, with matching serrated face service trigger. Factory markings are .38 S&W Spl. right side of barrel, Smith & Wesson on the left side, standard Trade mark logo with Reg. U.S. Pat. Ofc. on the side plate, and Made in U.S.A. / Marcas Registradas / Smith & Wesson / Springfield, Mass. on the frame right side. Military agency markings AF-08-1245 CSO are scribed upon the left side of barrel and frame, and inside the top strap. Yoke number is 56500 range with three armorer and proof marks; Mod. 10 inside the frame opposite the yoke, with no serialization inside or on the rear cylinder face. Grips are original diamond pattern checkered walnut whose numbers match the revolver. Finish is blued steel and color casehardened hammer and trigger, with oil finish grip panels. Apart from the military marks, Surface detractions are moderate, principally finish freckling, edge wear, and wear to the grip panels. We rate this model 10 as Very Good, 75 %vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent 11 pounds vicinity, and the hammer travels fully 10 degrees on all six positions in double action after the cylinder times. On single action, the hammer travels 25 degreeson all six, and single action trigger pull measures a crisp original 3 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal with the trigger relaxed; and negligible with the trigger fully depressed. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect .007. Bore and cylinder chambers are bright and clean. We estimate this revolver was fired fewer than 300 times. This revolver was on high alert duty on the front lines of the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, less than 300 miles from the Soviet Intercept. The Puerto Rican Air National Guard, whose markings appear as described, took custody of this revolver and several of its mates some time in the 1970s. We’re offering it for only $ 459.00.
