The Ballistic Advantage, founded in 2008 in Ocoee, Florida, makes hundreds of thousands of super quality barrels per year. They fall into three categories: Modern, Performance and Premium.
The Modern barrels cover 9x19mm, 5.56 NATO, 300 Blackout, 308 Winchester, etc. They’re made of 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium (CrMoV) steel bar stock. It’s then cut to the needed length, drilled, reamed and then button rifled. BA’s relatively economical barrels are match-grade quality with a flat crown and a chamfered muzzle. It’s the result of sophisticated production methods using custom designed CNC tooling and processes delivers bore uniformity equal to or better than .0003” or 1/3333rd of an inch! In fact, BA says many of its barrels maintain 1/6500th of an inch in uniformity throughout the entirety of the bore.
Once the barrel gets to this point, it receives a QPQ corrosion-resistant finish. QPQ is short for “quench polish quench”, which is a salt bath nitride that delivers tough nitrocarburizing case hardening. The entire manufacturing process is done with extensive quality control.
What emerges is a highly accurate button-rifled barrel fronted by threads. The straight-profile barrel operates without a gas block or a gas tube and uses blowback for cycling. It also includes an integrated M4 ramp feed and an integrated barrel extension. The true barrel length includes the barrel extension since it is integrated with the barrel. The result is sub-MOA accuracy, meaning groups of 1” less at 100 yards distance.
The Performance barrels are made of the same 4150 Chrome Moly Vanadium material but feature an 11-degree recessed muzzle-crown and the M4 ramp feeds have a slick nickel boron coating.
The Premium barrels are made of 416-R stainless steel. Stainless steel isn’t truly impervious to corrosion, but it resists it much longer than it might otherwise. The “-R” suffix trailing the 416 indicates the ability to endure greater temperature latitudes including to sub-zero temperatures. They feature bead-blasted finishes.
