Types of Short Barrel Rifles

The legal definition of a short-barreled rifle is a rifle with a barrel of less than 16 inches, or an overall length of less than 26 inches. Ownership of short-barrel rifles is regulated in the United States by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Short-barrel rifle owners must register their weapons with the BATFE and pay a $200 tax fee before building a short-barrel rifle or taking possession of one*. Although this restriction was put into place by the National Firearms Act of 1934, modern short barrel rifles are a long way off from the weapons targeted by that law.
