Parts of an AK-47

These are the basic parts of an AK, although they may have slight differences on variant models:

  • Receiver: The AK receiver is the core of the AK, and houses the internals like the fire control group, bolt, etc. Most modern AKs use a stamped receiver, but some variants may have a milled receiver.
  • Barrel: AK barrels vary in length depending on the model/variant and configuration.
  • Bolt Carrier Group (BCG): The AK bolt locks the chamber when firing, the carrier that drives the bolt and cycles the action, and the gas piston attached to the carrier that uses gases from the barrel to cycle the action.
  • Gas System: The gas block redirects gas from the barrel to the piston. The gas tube guides the piston and is a long-stroke gas piston system. This contributes to the AK's well-known reliability.
  • Fire Control Group (FCG): The AK trigger, hammer, disconnector, and safety/selector lever. AKs are known for having a robust FCG.
  • Furniture: Collectively, this includes the AK stock, pistol grip, and handguards. Classic furniture is made of wood, while modern models are often seen sporting more durable polymer. There are also aluminum and custom tactical options available.
  • Sights: The front sight is typically a hooded post adjustable for elevation. The rear sight is a notched tangent leaf that is adjustable for range. Many modern AKs also have side rails or a dovetail mount for optics.
  • Dust Cover: This protects the internal components from debris. Some are smooth, while others include Picatinny rails for mounting optics.
  • Magazine: AK magazines are the iconic curved box magazines that typically hold 30 rounds. They are made of steel, polymer, or bakelite.
