Although there are many calibers available on the platform, here is some basic information on AR-15 magazines:
AR-15 Magazine Capacities
Some areas have regulations regarding magazine capacity; be sure to check your local laws before purchasing.
- 10-Round: Mostly for compliance in certain states, but also used for hunting as they’re more maneuverable.
- 20-Round: Lighter weight and easier to use for prone or benchrest shooting.
- 30-Round: Standard-capacity magazines, and the most common. These are the default for both military and civilians.
- 40+ Round & Drum Magazines: These are heavy and a bit unwieldy, but a lot of fun at the range! Over time, they become less reliable than standard magazines.
AR Magazine Materials
There are three basic materials that AR-15 magazines are made out of:
- Polymer: Very lightweight and corrosion-resistant. The slight flex can help with feeding issues under stress. Popular and common, an example is the Magpul PMAG.
- Aluminum: Medium weight, these are the classic mil-spec style. They are tough, but can be dented more easily. They usually have anti-tilt followers and stainless or chrome-silicon springs.
- Steel: Heavier, stronger, and more durable, these are more common in military circles than in civilian ones.
