What’s the Difference Between a Single-Action and Double-Action Revolver?

  • Single-action revolvers are manually cocked before each shot by pulling the hammer back. Cocking a single-action rotates the cylinder to a fresh chamber, then the hammer stays cocked back until the trigger is pulled and the revolver is fired. These are most commonly “cowboy guns” with a traditional Old West look, and have a lighter trigger pull than a double-action.
  • Double-action revolvers cock the hammer, rotate the cylinder, and fire with one pull of the trigger. This makes follow-up shots much faster, but increases the trigger pull. Many modern designs feature both double-action and single-action operation, and are commonly known as DA/SA revolvers.

What is the Best Caliber for a Revolver?

As with any gun, the revolver caliber you choose should be determined by your intent. If you’re just getting started and looking for a target revolver to practice with, a 22LR is the perfect choice. 22LR ammo is readily available and inexpensive, allowing you plenty of time on the range to learn and hone new skills. However, most experts agree that the 22LR is underpowered as a self-defense gun.

For a concealed carry revolver, a .38 Special or .357 Magnum are very popular choices. The 38 revolver offers plenty of punch in a small package. It’s also manageable enough to put in range time for practice. Although a larger frame than the .38 SPL, a 357 revolver has the advantage of more power. Also, a .357 Magnum can safely chamber and fire .38 Special ammo, giving you the ability to get the most out of both calibers.

If you’re looking for a hunting or backcountry defense gun, it’s hard to go wrong with a 44 Magnum revolver. It offers serious stopping power and is considered the minimum caliber for grizzly bear defense, and an excellent caliber for black bear defense. It is generally considered overpowered for a beginner, though, so a smaller caliber should be considered if you’re buying your first handgun.

Are Revolvers Good for Beginners?

Yes, revolvers are an excellent choice for beginners. They are simple and straightforward to use, without having to rack a slide or manage a safety. They are also reliable and not prone to jamming or other issues that can and do occur with semi-auto pistols. That’s not to say that semi-autos are unreliable; they just have more features and controls to learn about that can be intimidating for new shooters. When selecting a first-time revolver, consider a DA/SA to maximize your learning and experience using both single-action and double-action.

Can I Legally Buy a Revolver Online?

Yes, you can legally buy a revolver online.* Once you have made your purchase, the gun is sent to an FFL (Federal Firearms License dealer) that you choose, usually a local gun store. GunBroker makes this easy with our FFL Finder. Once your revolver is received at the FFL, everything is handled just like an over-the-counter gun purchase. You’ll fill out an ATF Form 4473 and submit to a NICS background check. Once approved, the firearm is transferred to you. Before buying any gun, it’s important to check all of your local laws and regulations regarding firearm purchases. Some areas require special permits, have waiting periods, may restrict certain firearms, etc.
