What Are Good Guns to Collect?
The best guns to collect are the ones that interest you. Some collectors treat firearms as an investment: buying when prices are low and selling when prices rise. Others would never consider selling a gun out of their collection. Regardless of their philosophy, most gun collectors prefer to focus on what interests them.
Some collectors are very specific and collect only one kind of gun, 1911 pistols, for example. Others may collect only one brand, like having every model of GLOCK. Some focus on an era, like antique guns or only those from the early half of the 20th century. Some like all kinds of guns and have a wide assortment that they consider a collection. There’s no right or wrong answer.
Are Old Guns Worth Any Money?
The value of an old gun can vary widely. There are a lot of factors that come into play. Condition is usually the most important factor. An old gun that looks like it just came off the factory floor is going to be more valuable than one in very poor condition. Other factors include brand, age, and rarity. Another is historical significance. If the gun can be definitively tied to a historical event or famous person, values can skyrocket. Although very rare, some old guns have sold for millions of dollars. One way to help you find the value of an old gun is to use our Advanced Search feature. You can enter the make and model of your gun to see what current items are selling for, and use the “Completed” tab to see what they sold for in recent auctions. If you’re interested in selling your gun, check out the GunBroker Valet or list it yourself using our Tools for Sellers.
What Guns Are Considered Antiques?
Which guns are considered antiques is a little tricky in the gun-collecting world. This is because there is a legal definition of “antique firearms” that differs from the standard definition of “antique”. While any object over 100 years old is an antique, the National Firearms Act defines an antique firearm as follows*, 26 U.S.C. § 5845(G):
“For the purposes of the National Firearms Act, the term “Antique Firearms” means any firearm not intended or redesigned for using rim fire or conventional center fire ignition with fixed ammunition and manufactured in or before 1898 (including any matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap or similar type of ignition system or replica thereof, whether actually manufactured before or after the year 1898) and also any firearm using fixed ammunition manufactured in or before 1898, for which ammunition is no longer manufactured in the United States and is not readily available in the ordinary channels of commercial trade.”
