Can I Buy a Handgun Online?

Yes, you can buy a handgun online at GunBroker.* Once you’ve made your handgun purchase, it will be shipped to a local FFL (Federal Firearms License) holder in your area. GunBroker.com makes this easy by showing you a list of FFLs to choose from. You can also search for an FFL near you. When your handgun arrives at the FFL, you’ll be required to fill out an ATF Form 4473 and submit to a NICS background check, just like an over-the-counter gun purchase.

Depending on where you live, you may have waiting periods or additional steps, so it’s always important to check your local firearm laws before purchasing a handgun. In some areas of the country, special permits are required before purchasing firearms, and certain firearms may be restricted. Once you have checked your local laws, browse GunBroker for the gun you want and buy with immediate checkout, or start bidding on an exciting auction!

Types of Handguns

There are three basic types of handguns: revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, and single-shot pistols.

  • Revolvers have a cylinder that holds the ammo in separate chambers. The cylinder rotates every time the hammer is pulled back. Once fired, the hammer rests on the empty cartridge until the hammer is pulled back again. Revolvers may be single-action, where the hammer is pulled back manually with the thumb, or double-action, where pulling the trigger also pulls back the hammer. A revolver that does both is called an SA/DA. Most revolvers hold six rounds, although five-round models are popular for concealed carry, and other models hold up to ten rounds. Popular models include the Colt Python, Ruger GP100, and Smith and Wesson Model 10.
  • Semi-automatic pistols fire every time the trigger is pulled. Ammo is held in a magazine, usually in the grip. Each time the pistol fires, the empty cartridge is ejected and a new round is chambered. Semi-auto pistols are popular for self-defense. They hold more ammo and have a flatter shape, making them easier for concealed carry than a revolver. They are also used worldwide by police and the military. Most semi-automatic pistols hold 10 to 15 rounds. This can change based on the caliber and size of the handgun. Popular models include the GLOCK 19, Springfield Hellcat, and SIG SAUER P320.
  • Single-shot pistols only hold one cartridge at a time. Empty cartridges are extracted from the chamber before the next one can be manually loaded. They are most often break-action, although some are bolt-action. Bolt-action single-shot pistols are used for target shooting and hunting, as are other break-action models like the Thompson Center Contender.

There are also other types of handguns. They don’t fit into the categories of revolver, semi-auto, or single-shot, but they are readily available.

One example is the derringer. They are highly concealable, feature a break-action, and are designed for self-defense, often with two barrels. Bond Arms is a well-known modern manufacturer of such derringers. Another notable example is the four-barrel COP 357 Derringer.

There are even lever-action pistols, like the Henry Mare’s Leg.
