Enfield Percussion Pistol, possibly 1858 Pattern, approximately 63 caliber, is up for bids. The steel's finish is in the white with surface rust in places such as the nipple, metal around the nipple and around the hinge of the articulated ramrod and elsewhere. There is a line of surface rust on each side of the barrel (need to remove barrel from stock to see it) where metal meets the wood of the stock. The lug (? - question mark indicates I do not know if this is the correct term) on the bottom of the barrel is rusty as was the wedge that locks into it to hold barrel to stock. Brass condition is VG+ with some small dings on backstrap. The condition of, and the markings on, the pistol can be seen in the accompanying photographs but I will also the markings below and hope I get them all. Note that areas marked are separated by periods and individual marks within each area separated by commas for this description. On The Lock Plate (?): 1863, ENFIELD, a stamped Crown over the initials V.R (which I think mean Victoria Regina or Queen Victoria who was the Queen for the period relative to this pistol), a smaller crown (?) with arrow dropping down from it, what appears to be the number 57. On the brass butt - several proof marks. On the brass piece that holds ramrod - a few proof marks that appear to be an arrow pointing toward muzzle under which seem to be WD, under which appears to be the number 4, under which is an upper case E. On brass trigger guard, forward section, an arrow pointing toward muzzle, under which are the letters WD, under which is what may or may not be the number 4, under which is an uppercase E. On left rear end of barrel starting at end closest to muzzle: a small crown or ornate M, under which is an uppercase E, under which is a crown, under which is a B, under which is the number 32, under which is a symbol I cannot make out, under which are the letters V.R, under which is a symbol that is possibly two (2) crossed swords or crossed pennants, under which is 2P (number two and letter P), under which is an arrow pointing toward muzzle, under which are the letters WD, under which is a 7. Atop rear portion of barrel starting from end closest to muzzle: a symbol or symbols I cannot decipher, under which are the letters V. R, under which are two (2) crossed swords or pennants, under which is the number two (2) followed by letter P. On the wedge (?) that secures barrel to the stock: a number 7, under which is an arrow pointing up toward the 7, under which are the letters WD. On the screw that secures the barrel tang to the stock is an arrow similar to the others mentioned. On the screw, on left side of stock above trigger is an arrow similar to the others. On the screw that hold the trigger in place a similar arrow as the others. The hinge that articulates the ramrod has a number 7 stamped on its left outer side. The leading edge or face of the hammer has an engraved or stamped diamond pattern. I think I have covered all the stampings. The metal finish is in the white with surface rust in places such as around the nipple and around the hinge of the articulated ramrod. The bore has very slight surface rust and appears to be in VG condition. The wood is overall VG+ with one slight chip just forward of the hole through which passes the wedge (?) that holds barrel to stock on right side of stock and a few minor dings overall. Pistol has diamond checkering. I have posted pictures and you can see condition of the pistol in the pics although I think I have described it well. As for mechanical condition, it appears to function as it should. Hammer is of half-cock and full-cock type action. Trigger activates/drops hammer from full-cock. I have not test fired this pistol. I do not know if it is safe to shoot nor do I guarantee or warrant, in any manner, that it is safe to shoot. I strongly recommend that if you plan to shoot it you first have it inspected by a competent gunsmith, who is familiar with this type of pistol, to determine if it seems safe to shoot.
